Can I Take a U-Haul on the Merritt Parkway? NO. Here's why and here's the alternate route.

If you’re renting a U-Haul in Northampton, Westfield, Springfield, or anywhere else in Western Massachusetts this fall, here’s the answer before you get trapped by GPS:

No. You cannot take a U-Haul, Budget truck, Penske, moving van, or box truck on the Merritt Parkway.

Not “probably not.” Not “only if you drive carefully.”

Do not take it.

The Merritt Parkway is Connecticut Route 15 from the New York state line in Greenwich to Exit 54 in Milford, running through Fairfield and New Haven counties, and the Connecticut Department of Transportation prohibits rental trucks and box trucks from using it. The road also has older, low overpasses, narrow lanes, tight curves, and historic stone-faced bridges that were never designed for modern moving trucks.

That’s how a normal DIY move turns into a “Storrowed”-style disaster: flashing lights, a stuck truck, angry traffic, a tow bill, a damaged rental, and a move that is suddenly very much not on budget.

THE MERRITT PARKWAY IS A PASSENGER-VEHICLE ROAD

The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s official Parkway Restrictions page identifies the Merritt Parkway as Route 15 from the New York state line in Greenwich to Exit 54 in Milford.

CTDOT’s restrictions apply to the Merritt, Wilbur Cross, and Milford Parkways. The agency states that vehicles may not use these parkways if they are:

  • More than 8 feet tall

  • More than 24 feet long

  • More than 7 feet 6 inches wide, excluding mirrors

Those are the posted physical limits. But the important part for you is even simpler:

  • Box trucks are prohibited.

  • Tractor-trailers are prohibited.

  • All rental trucks are prohibited.

  • Trailers are prohibited.

  • RVs and campers are prohibited.

  • Most commercial vehicles are prohibited.

That includes the typical rental moving truck you pick up for a fall apartment move or long-distance relocation.

Very important: the 8-foot number is a parkway vehicle-height limit, not a promise that every bridge on the road has 8 feet of usable clearance. Don’t look at the number and think, “My truck is 8 feet exactly, so I’m good.”

You’re not good. A rental truck is still prohibited.

WHY GPS KEEPS SENDING MOVERS THERE

GPS apps are built to find the fastest or shortest route for a general passenger vehicle. They don’t always understand that your rental truck is tall, wide, long, heavily loaded, and restricted from certain parkways.

In other words, your navigation app may be doing excellent math while making a terrible moving decision.

It sees Route 15 and says:

“This looks efficient.”

It does not always say:

“This route is illegal for your 15-foot rental truck.”

That’s the problem.

A regular car can legally use the Merritt Parkway if it meets the posted restrictions. Your U-Haul cannot. The app may route you toward an entrance before you see the warning signs, especially if you’re focused on traffic, directions, your mirrors, and the couch sliding sideways in the back.

And once you’re on the Parkway, turning around isn’t simple. You’re on a limited-access road with restricted shoulders and narrow exits. Do not wait until you see a low bridge to make a decision.

THE TRUCK-SAFE ALTERNATE FROM WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

If you’re leaving Northampton, Westfield, Springfield, or the Pioneer Valley and heading toward New York, use the Interstate corridor instead.

OPTION 1: WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS TO NEW YORK CITY

For most DIY movers heading from Western Massachusetts toward New York City or southern Connecticut:

  1. Take I-91 South.

  2. Continue toward New Haven.

  3. Take I-95 South toward Stamford and New York.

  4. Stay on I-95 and follow the signs for your final destination.

  5. Do not switch onto Route 15/Merritt Parkway.

This route may take longer than the Merritt Parkway under perfect traffic conditions. That’s okay. You’re moving a truck, not qualifying for a Formula 1 race.

I-95 is the truck-appropriate alternative through coastal Connecticut. It’s a major freight corridor and is designed for larger commercial vehicles, subject to normal height, weight, lane, construction, and local restrictions.

For a Northampton or Westfield mover, the simplest mental rule is:

I-91 South to I-95 South. Not Route 15.

OPTION 2: WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS TO DANBURY, WESTCHESTER, OR THE HUDSON VALLEY

If your destination is Danbury, northern Westchester, or the Hudson Valley, a better route may be:

  1. Take I-91 South toward Hartford.

  2. Take I-84 West toward Danbury and New York.

  3. Use I-684 or the appropriate Interstate connection for your destination.

  4. Follow posted truck routing and avoid New York parkways.

The Massachusetts Freight Plan identifies I-84, I-90, I-91, I-93, and I-95 as major Interstate corridors in the Commonwealth. It also identifies the I-84-to-I-90 corridor as a primary through-truck route between Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts.

The New York State Department of Transportation Truck Access Book identifies I-84, I-87, I-90, and I-95 as qualifying highways for larger vehicles in New York.

That’s the kind of network you want: Interstates and designated truck-access roads.

DO NOT REPLACE THE MERRITT WITH ANOTHER NEW YORK PARKWAY

Here’s another mistake I cannot tell you how many DIY movers make:

They avoid the Merritt Parkway but let GPS send them onto a different New York parkway.

Don’t do that.

New York’s parkway system includes restrictions on commercial vehicles. That means you should be extremely cautious around:

  • Taconic State Parkway

  • Palisades Interstate Parkway

  • Saw Mill River Parkway

  • Hutchinson River Parkway

  • Bronx River Parkway

  • Sprain Brook Parkway

  • Cross County Parkway

A rental truck is not automatically legal just because the road is wide, fast, or recommended by your phone.

The same principle applies in Boston. Do not take a moving truck onto Storrow Drive, Memorial Drive, Soldiers Field Road, or another road marked for passenger cars only. That is how trucks get wedged under bridges and earn a nickname nobody wants.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RENTAL LOT, DO THIS

Don’t wait until you’re halfway through Connecticut. Plan before you put the truck in drive.

IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY ENTER THE MERRITT

If you realize you’re on the Merritt Parkway in a prohibited vehicle, don’t panic and don’t attempt a risky U-turn.

CTDOT’s official guidance says to:

  1. Turn on your hazard lights.

  2. Pull to the shoulder or roadside area, making sure the truck is completely out of the travel lane.

  3. Call 911 for assistance exiting the Parkway.

Do not continue forward hoping the next exit will solve everything. Do not drive toward a low bridge to “see if you fit.” That is caveman-level route planning, and cavemen did not have rental damage waivers.

THE BOTTOM LINE FOR YOUR FALL MOVE

If you’re driving a U-Haul from Western Massachusetts toward New York:

  • Do not use the Merritt Parkway.

  • Do not use Route 15 as an alternate. Route 15 is the Merritt Parkway.

  • Use I-91 South to I-95 South for New York City and coastal destinations.

  • Use I-91 South to I-84 West, then appropriate Interstate connections for Danbury, Westchester, or the Hudson Valley.

  • Avoid New York parkways, Boston parkways, and roads marked “No Trucks.”

  • Confirm signs, construction, and current regulations before leaving.

The official sources linked above provide the restrictions and designated freight corridors available when this post was prepared. Regulations, signage, construction, and detours can change, so confirm current conditions before every trip.

If you don’t want to drive the rental truck yourself, Haul of Fame Movers can help with labor-only loading and unloading in Westfield, Northampton, Springfield, and surrounding Massachusetts communities. You rent the truck, and we bring the muscle.
