Hey everyone! If you’re getting ready to move, today I want to talk about how to pack your boxes the right way so your moving day goes smoother, faster, and with a lot less stress.
Whether you’re hiring movers or doing it yourself, the way you pack can make a huge difference in how efficient your move ends up being.
And honestly, most people don’t realize there’s actually a right way and a wrong way to pack moving boxes.
So let’s start with something simple but really important.
First — always tape your boxes instead of just folding the bottoms closed.
A lot of people take a box, fold the bottom flaps together, and think that’s enough. But when you start putting dishes, books, or anything heavy inside, those flaps can pop open.
What you want to do is create a strong taped base.
Use the “H method.”That means taping along the center seam and then across both edges so the tape makes an “H” shape. This reinforces the bottom and prevents boxes from splitting open while they’re being carried.
Trust me — movers see boxes break open all the time because they weren’t taped properly.
Next tip: label your boxes clearly.
This sounds obvious, but most people either don’t label their boxes at all or they write something super vague like “stuff.”
Instead, write the room name and a quick description.
For example:“Kitchen – Pots and Pans”“Bedroom – Winter Clothes”“Bathroom – Towels”
This helps movers place the boxes in the correct rooms and makes unpacking way easier later.
Now let’s talk about fragile items.
If a box contains glass, dishes, electronics, or anything breakable, write “FRAGILE” clearly on multiple sides of the box.
Not just one side — write it on at least two or three sides.
This helps movers identify which boxes need extra care and ensures they don’t get stacked underneath heavier items.
Another huge tip that can save you time and money on moving day is staging your boxes near the entrance.
As you finish packing, try to move the majority of your boxes toward the front door, hallway, or garage.
This does two things:
It keeps your home organized.
It makes it much faster for movers to load the truck.
Movers work most efficiently when they can grab boxes quickly without walking through the entire house over and over again. If the bulk of your boxes are already staged near the entrance, the loading process goes a lot faster.
And since many moving companies charge by the hour, efficiency can actually save you money.
Another helpful tip: don’t make your boxes too heavy.
A good rule is to pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in larger boxes.
For example:
Books → small boxesPillows or linens → large boxes
If you load a huge box full of books, it becomes extremely heavy and harder to carry safely.
Last tip — and this one is underrated — leave walkways clear.
Make sure movers can easily move through your home without tripping over piles of items or half-packed boxes. Clear paths help prevent accidents and keep the move moving quickly.
So just to recap:
• Tape the bottoms of your boxes using the H method• Label every box with the room and contents• Write FRAGILE clearly on delicate items• Stage most of your boxes near the entrance• Avoid making boxes too heavy• Keep walkways clear for easy loading
Packing the right way might take a little more time upfront, but it can make your entire moving day smoother, safer, and faster.
